Nickel City Poetry Slam Finals and Archaeology with Old Fort Niagara

Art Activity: Games, Flags and Fun with Old Fort Niagara

Get into the 18th Century spirit with Old For Niagara! Create an 1812 flag, learn to write with a quill pen, and participate in period games.

Archaeology Night with Old Fort Niagara
Old Fort Niagara comes to the Albright-Knox for an evening of archeology and entertainment for all! View archaeology artifacts found at Old Fort Niagara, see classic 18th century dancing, meet early North American characters, and listen to the Fort’s Fyfe and Drums Corps.

This will include “Join the King’s Army Drill” with wooden toy muskets for children.

Archaeology Lecture

Archaeological research has provided insights into the lives of those who lived at Fort Niagara throughout its long history. In this presentation, Dr. Elizabeth Peńa and Dr. Susan Maguire, both from Buffalo State College, discuss recent and ongoing excavations and research.

Nickel City Poetry Slam Finals

The Nickel City Poetry Slam is funded, in part, by the NYSCA Literature program.

With Carlos Andres Gomez, renowned Slam poet and actor who among his extensive accolades was featured in Spike Lee’s 2006 film Inside Man alongside Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster. Gomez also performed on HBO’s “Russell Simons Presents Def Poetry.” Join Gomez and twelve of Buffalo’s best performance poets for the long-awaited finals of our Nickel City Poetry Slam. Poets will compete in verbal battles for one of the four spots on Buffalo’s own Poetry Slam Team and a chance to be sent to the National Poetry Slam in Madison, Wisconsin.
* Entrance fee for this special event is $12 and all proceeds go to Buffalo’s Poetry Slam Team. Cash bar.

Celebrate “Moms that Rock” when Mamapolooza 2008 takes over the Albright-Knox. Hear mother musicians, artists, authors, and dancers perform everything from ‘Storytellers Theater’ to belly dancing. Performers for the festival include: Liz Abbott, the Beatchicks, Faaria, Noa Bursie, Kilissa Cissoko, Annette Daniels Taylor, Jennifer Elinge, Daughters of Creative Sound, Folkloric Productions, Barbara Levy-Daniels, Linda M, Wise Mecca, Vonetta T. Art Activity: AIR Calame 102: From the Ground Plan Up

Ingrid Calame uses the floor plans of buildings to create a basis for her work. Learn about her process and create the basis for your own artwork using floor plans as source material.
* This Art Activity is part of AIR. Calame Academy, designed to celebrate and prepare WNY for the Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s first Artist-In-Residence (AIR) program featuring Artist Ingrid Calame. Come to all four workshops and receive a degree in AIR Calame!

Workshop: Brazilian Percussion with Diaspora Drumming

Tiffany Nicely, Ringo Brill, and Gabriel Gutierrez have studied music extensively and have traveled the globe learning world percussion from masters in Cuba, Brazil, Africa and more.

Demonstration: Capoeira Mandinga

An exciting art form and self-defense from Brazil created over 400 years ago as a fight for freedom, includes elements of dance, music and community. Capoeira Mandinga Buffalo was established in Western New York in 1997, led by Contra Mestre Falcao.

Concert: Lula and Jake

Guitarist, vocalists, and songwriters Luiz (Lula) Paulo Correia da Silva and Jacob (Jake) Paul Bradley met when Lula came to America from Brazil on foreign exchange to Buffalo, NY. The duo immediately began collaborating, writing, and performing together. Jake and Lula’s originals and covers are based on strong melodies built on vocal harmonies and acoustic guitars.

Concert: Luiz Simas

Join us for a concert with celebrated Brazilian composer and pianist Luiz Simas. He has performed and recorded with top Brazilian artists including with guitarist Lulu Santos, bass player Fernando Gama and more. He will perform in a variety of genres from choro, a Brazilian ragtime to Brazilian pop and jazz.
