Panel Discussion: Keeping Up With the Law: Taking a Look at Charity, Giving and the Arts

The panel will discuss legal issues which affect artists, managers, collectors, trustees, Donors, and the public. Moderator: Andrew Spong (2nd year arts management and law student). Panelists include Andy Finch, Arts Lobbyist, Ed Cardoni, Director Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Centre, Sandra Olsen, Director UB Art Galleries, Chief Financial Officer Albright-Knox Art Gallery Patrick Kilcullen.

Nickel City Poetry Slam

Join us for our Nickel City Poetry Slam series, the evening begins with a performance by nationally recognized slam poet from the Toronto Slam team. Afterwards, the hottest local spoken word artists compete for a $25 cash prize and a chance to be on the first national Buffalo Poetry Slam Team, competing in Madison, WI in 2008! Who will be the best? You be the judge!
Signup: 7:30 p.m., on a first come basis.

Performance: The Gay Men’s Chorus Greatest Hits

The Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus, now in its 7th season, returns to the Albright-Knox stage for a “best of” performance. The Chorus, which is comprised of 75 remarkable voices, is under the direction of Barbara Wagner and will perform an eclectic mix of music from pops to Broadway to opera. The performance will include a new repertoire as well as some old favorites including Billy Joel’s ‘The Longest Time,’ Franz Biebl’s ‘Ava Maria,’ and ‘I Know Where I’ve Been’ from the recent hit film Hairspray.

A young girl named Sophie is cursed by a witch and given an old woman's body. Shamed of how she looks, she flees to the woods and happens upon Wizard Hauru's strange Moving Castle. While in the castle, Sophie makes a deal with a demon named Calcifer who can return her to her 18-year-old self.

The evening will finish with a major fashion show production featuring ready-to-wear originals from Elmwood Avenue shops and by the students from the Fashion Technology Department at Buffalo State College.

Reading: Le Petit Prince (‘The Little Prince’)

Enjoy a reading (in English) of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic novella in which the author meets a young prince while stranded in the Sahara Desert and explores the purpose of human life through the eyes of a child.

7 p.m.
Film: Ratatouille (2007). Directed by Brad Bird and Jan Pinkava. 111 minutes.

In this animated family film, Remy, a provincial rat, heads to Paris against his family’s wishes to pursue his dreams of becoming a chef in a five-star restaurant. In Paris he befriends Linguini, the restaurant’s young garbage boy, and the two unlikely culinary whizzes take the French cooking world by storm.

French Wine and Cheese Pairing

Come into muse, the Gallery’s restaurant, for a tasting of vin et fromage from France. Also this evening, muse will feature a special prix fixe menu of French cuisine available for those who wish to dine in.

What kind of artist would have himself lashed to the mast of a ship in a snowstorm just to see what it was like? Bow to a castle in Wales in thanks for its contribution to his artistic career? Temporarily darken a sky in a glowing painting to avoid upsetting a friend? Happily sketched away while the Houses of Parliament burned? A rather eccentric artist like Joseph Mallord William Turner!
