Curatorial Assistant
The Curatorial Assistant is the conduit between the Curators and the other Gallery departments, fundamental for the Gallery’s internal as well as external communication. The position will be expected not only to interface with various staff, but also with artists and collegial contacts in national and international arenas.
Responsibilities
- The Curatorial Assistant is also responsible for the daily correspondence from the Curatorial department (by mail, phone, and email). This includes generating exhibition rejection letters and fielding daily telephone queries.
- Under the direction of Senior Curator, and working with the Associate Curator, the Curatorial Assistant’s main responsibilities revolve around the organization and management of all details associated with exhibitions (both Permanent Collection based and Special Exhibitions), from conception to installation. This includes, among other things, the administration of the overall exhibition schedule for internal use, preparation and management of loan forms, creation and management of the checklist (copy and images), coordinating events associated with openings, as well as generating content for internal dispersal, exhibition texts, the Gallery’s newsletter and website.
- Prepares materials for the Publications department. This includes checklist copy as well as helping to collect image rights for catalogue reproductions.
- Interface with other museums and galleries regarding acquisitions, installation, and details associated with more extensive collaborations. The Curatorial Assistant is also the first contact with artists.
- Acts as the Curatorial representative on certain internal team projects and communication efforts.
- Schedules meetings for the Curatorial Department and pertinent staff, including exhibition-based project meetings.
- Gives special attention to VIP guests, which may include making travel arrangements and giving tours of the exhibitions on view.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in Art History
- Competent writing skills and the ability to research varied topics
- Competent public speaking skills
- Computer proficiency with command of Excel, Access, and PowerPoint essential
- Interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to manage simultaneous projects effectively and efficiently including the ability to be proactive and efficient in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- Qualified individuals are expected to have a professional demeanor, to be highly organized, and to be detail oriented
